Following the 2012 re-election of President Obama, CEO John C. Metz, who operates roughly 40 Denny's locations and 5 Hurricane Grill & Wings locations, announced that he would impose a 5% surcharge on all orders to help pay for healthcare coverage for his employees. And customers "...can either pay it and tip 15 or 20 percent, or if they really feel so inclined, they can reduce the amount of tip they give to the server, who is the primary beneficiary of Obamacare," Metz said. To further offset the costs, Metz, who oversees roughly 1,200 employees, said he will also slash most of their hours to fewer than 30 hours per week.
